Race Reports

31/05/07 - TriAthy

Last weekend saw the running of the Triathy triathlon. This triathlon attracted over 1000 competitors to the town of Athy in Kildare. The weather on the day was extremely warm and plenty of sun screen and fluids were needed to survive the race. There were two races on the day - an Olympic distance race and a sprint distance race. Joe Cantwell and Denis O'Meara took part in the Olympic distance race along with 467 other competitors.

This race involved a top quality field with many international triathletes competing on the day. The 1500m swim took place in the Barrow river, and was followed by a 40km flat cycle and a 10km run. First home for Nenagh was Denis O'Meara in a great time of 2:20:29. This was the first time Denis has competed over the distance so this is a very promising time for him. Joe Cantwell experienced mechanical difficulties with his bike during the race which caused him to lose time on the course. Their final positions were 141st and 242nd.

Five Nenagh triathletes entered the sprint triathlon in Athy. There were 575 triathletes in the field. Star of the day in the sprint triathlon was Michael O'Dwyer who came 12th in only his second ever triathlon. Andrew McLoughlin experienced severe mechanical problems on the bike which prevented him from clocking a final time.

The final positions of the Nenagh triathletes in the sprint race were - Shane Scully 4th, Michael O'Dwyer - 12th, Kevin Sherlock - 33rd, Jennifer Collison - 323rd, Andrew McLoughlin - N/A. Next race on the triathlon calendar is the 'Hell of the West' Kilkee triathlon on June 28th
