Valentia 2009
May 16th saw the start of the first of the national series races of the year. This race took place on Valentia Island with three of the Nenagh triathletes taking part. The weather conditions were anything but favourable and with a hilly course set out, the winds were certainly not going to make it any easier.
All three athletes, Shane Scully, Kevin Sherlock and Ailbhe Carroll all started off in the first wave of the day. The swim course had to be changed due to the choppy waters so with a swim a little less than the full 750m, the new wetsuits weren’t going to be the saviors of the day!( It was all down to talent!)
Shane was first out of the water for the club, followed by Ailbhe and then Kevin. The winds picked up and the hail stones thumped down for the cycle, making conditions tough, sorting the men from the boys.
Shane, placing 5th overall put in a solid performance to come home first for the club. Kevin followed him home over the line shortly after with another very solid performance. And Ailbhe also came home strongly to finish 7th (I think).
Well done to all athletes and to Joe Cantwell especially who played a stormer as race referee!
