North Tipp Sprint 2010

The North Tipp Sprint has come and gone, leaving 212 triathletes with tired limbs, and trisuit sun tans. For the second year in a row it has been a scorcher of a day. It wasn't just the high temperatures that were burning up the course it was the triathletes as well. None more so than the overall winner of the race Conor Murphy, who almost went under the hour mark for this tough course.

Things kicked off shortly after 9:30 and with 7 waves to get through it was going to be a hard day for our lane counters. By the time the favourites in Wave 6 and Wave 7 were entering the pool the sun was rising high to greet them on their exit. It was Conor Rooney who exited the 750m swim first in a lightning fast time of 9:01. He was closely followed out of the pool by the pre race favourite Conor Murphy and his brother Stephen Rooney. The chasing pack of men and women all exited the pool nearly 2 mins behind.

Leading the women's race after the swim was Lisa Horgan. Lisa was followed closely by last year's winner Lynne Algar. The pre race favourite, Elena Maslova, was 1:15 down on the 2 girls leaving the pool.

The bike route was a technical course with a number of hills to navigate. The fastest bike split of the day was put in by Alan Buckley in a time of 29:23. At the end of the cycle Conor Murphy's lead had been cut down significantly with William McCormack, Louis Kelleher, Shane Scadding and Hugh Carberry closing quickly.

Elena Maslova put in a superb bike time of 31:13 to gain the lead in the women's race over Lisa Horagn and Lynne Algar.

It was tight in both the mens and womens race going onto the run. The run route contained some tough hills so plenty of guts and determination would be needed if they wanted to be crowned champion. The fastest run split of the day came from Conor Murphy in 18:35 and with that came the title of Male senior champion 2010. Making onto the podium beside Conor were William McCormack and Louis Kelleher who both had their highest finishes in a National Series event.

Elena Maslova continued her fine run of form by taking the womens 2010 title after a fast run split of 20:10. Elena came 10th overall. In second place was Lisa Horgan who is making a welcome return to the sport after a few years out. Last years champion Lynne Algar came in third overall.

The Nenagh triathlon club would like to congratulate everybody who took part. It was great watching everyone from first timers to seasoned veterans giving it their all. Goodluck with the rest of your season.
