Kilkee 2009
The greatly anticipated weekend of racing in Kilkee finally arrived last weekend, Saturday the 27th. With 10 Nenagh triathletes rising to the challenge this certainly made for a fun filled competitive weekend.
The race was blessed with beautiful weather so loads of sun cream was needed and good hydration was critical. With the sun splitting the rocks and the very calm wind, the conditions were set up for a very good race for all.
The first of the Nenagh athletes home was Shane Scully in a very impressive time of 2.19. Scully put in a very healthy performance but unfortunately he experienced some bike problems on the course adding to his time significantly. Keith Butler came home just short of his goal of 2 and a half hours, 2.31. A very solid performance from him indeed.
The on going battle between Joe Cantwell, Denis O Meara and Kevin Sherlock was certainly evident in Kilkee. Joe was the last of these men out of the water but he put in a whopper of a race to cross the line first in a time of 2.39. Well done Joe. Denis and Kevin followed shortly after, both men wrecked after some hard racing.
A newbie to the longer distances was Brian O ‘ Rourke who finished very strongly only a mere 32 seconds behind Kevin. Well done Brian. Paul Nevin also finishing very strongly in a good time only a minute behind the lads. Anthony Sherlock and Gary Prout also had good races. Gary’s mishap of losing his water bottle early into the bike route, left him slightly dehydrated and made his racing conditions that little bit more difficult.
Bad luck didn’t manage to escape all club members however. Eddie O Meara’s tyres blew on the bike and unfortunately it left him unable to carry on. It was very disappointing for Eddie as he had put in a very good swim time. All in all, the club had a great day out and no doubt a great post party celebration was had by all.
The weekend left many people hungry for what next year has to offer. Many will be looking to come back fitter and stronger and beat their times from this year. The competition will be just as stiff next year so everybody knows what is required so as to get the job done!
