Joey Hannon 2010
The Joey Hannon triathlon is an important event for many of the Nenagh triathletes and this year was no exception with seven triathletes making the short trip into Limerick to take on all comers. The event is split into a sprint distance triathlon and an Olympic distance triathlon which is a National Series event. 2 of our members took on the longer distance while 5 members went for the short distance.
As usual the event was very well organised and the Limerick club must be congratulated for that. The sun hadn't quite broken through yet when the first wave of the Sprint distance triathlon begun. The sprint distance included a 500m swim, 23km bike, and 5km run. First home for the club was Ailbhe Carrol in a time of 1.16.10. Ailbhe came home in 16th place overall and was the first woman home so she took the winners prize. Next home was Brian O'Neill who put in a very strong bike leg to come home in 30th position. Not long after came Benny Delaney and Ciaran Moran who both put in good efforts.
Special praise goes to Colm Glynn who was competing in his first triathlon. Colm put in a very solid performance and was rightfully very happy with his race afterwards.
The Olympic distance triathlon took place after the sprint triathlon and it attracted many of the countries top triathletes to the starting line. The Olympic distance consisted of a 1500m swim, 39km bike and 10km run. There was a nice breeze blowing at this stage but at least the early morning showers had gone.
Both Shane and Kevin started in the fast wave and they both got off to good starts in the swim. Shane followed this up with a fast bike and run to come home in fourth place overall and first in the 30 - 34 age group category. Shane's final time was just under the 2 hour mark - 1:59:21. Kevin 'marked man' Sherlock followed his good swim with a cagey performance on the bike and a good run to beat his target time by 9 minutes. Kevin's final time was 2:20:55.
