Joey Hannon 09

Well done to all the Nenagh triathletes who travelled to Limerick yesterday to take part in both the standard and sprint distance Joey Hannon triathlon. The weather conditions on the day were sunny and windy and the race was organised very well by the Limerick triathlon club.

The standard distance triathlon took off first. With 2 Nenagh men, Kevin Sherlock and Joe Cantwell taking part, it was going to be a close battle up until the very end. Kevin hopped out of the pool first to gain a slight advantage on Joe. However, Joe didn’t let that phase him and managed to catch Kevin on the bike route. It was all down to the run. Joe headed out on the run first but Kevin managed to track him down to claim the title of first Nenagh man home! Well done to both lads for taking on the challenging course.

8 athletes took to the sprint distance and with the sun beating down, the atmosphere around the place was buzzing. All athletes were in the last wave of the day. The battle for winner of the sprint distance race came down to 2 men Shane Scully and Mike Yelverton of the Limerick triathlon club. Mike was first out of the swim and had a minute up on Scully on the bike, but he was eventually caught by Scully. With less than a minute up on Yelverton from the bike, Scully pushed it on a bit on the run to open up a 2 minute gap. Great determination was shown by Shane throughout the race. Well done to him on his win.

Ailbhe Carroll also had a good race finishing strongly to win the junior section and come home in 3rd place overall in the women’s section. With a top 20 finish overall, Ailbhe showed that there is a good season ahead in store for her.

Gary Prout, Benny Delaney, Shane Kelly, Paddy Keneally, Brian O’Neill and Gillian Quinlan all put in solid performances. A great day was had by everyone and a special mention must be given to Shane Kelly who managed to claim a spot prize! Talent like this is rare and exceptional, we are just glad we can call him one of our own!!!
