Race Reports
06/05/08 - Joey Hannon Triathlon, Limerick
The Joey Hannon triathlon took place on the 4th of May. The triathlon consisted of both a short distance race and a long distance race. As this was the first triathlon of the year for the Nenagh triathletes we all decided to take the easier option and compete in the 500m swim, 26km bike and 5km run - sprint triathlon.
The weather conditions were great on the day as 165 triathletes took to the starting line. 8 Nenagh triathletes took part in the race with Jennifer Collison and Shane Scully both winning their race categories. The swim took place in the 50m pool in UL and proved harder work than expected for the Nenagh triathletes. The bike route was flat and took everyone out the Limerick by-pass and back to the college. The final 5km was a flat run around the UL complex.
Most of the top Irish triathletes took part in the long distance triathlon, even still, the Nenagh lads placed very well in the final results sheet. Even with the rustiness that comes with it being the first race of the season we had four members in the top 10 and all our other members performed really well too.
The final positions of the Nenagh triathletes were as follows:
- Shane Scully - 1st
- Keith Butler - 3rd
- Michael O'Dwyer - 8th
- Andrew McLoughlin - 10th *
- Denis O'Meara - 19th
- Kevin Sherlock - 23rd
- Cian McCormack - 69th
- Jennifer Collison - 83rd
Special credit goes to Jennifer Collison who done extremely well on what was her first ever triathlon. She was the first female junior home and she put in some very impressive split times. Hopefully it is the first victory of many.
* Andy McCloughlin did two extra lengths of the pool !(600m)
